Explorador islandés, posiblemente el primer europeo en llegar a América del Norte. Leif, segundo hijo de Erik el Rojo, viajaba desde Noruega de regreso a Groenlandia, donde había sido enviado por Olaf I Tryggveson para convertir a los nativos al cristianismo ( 1000), cuando perdió el rumbo y desembarcó probablemente en Nueva Escocia, a la que llamó Vinland. Este relato clásico proviene de la obra islandesa la Saga de Erik. Otro relato, la Saga de los Groenlandeses, sostiene que Leif supo de Vinland por un hombre que había estado allí 14 años antes y que el explorador islandés llegó a América del Norte después de 1000.
